Nov. 2--A few weeks ago, the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota held a summit featuring CEOs from many of the United States' best companies and scholars from some of its leading universities.

Prior to the meetings, Jim Buckman, co-director of the Juran Center for Leadership in Quality at the university, noted: "Only a small percentage of companies ever truly achieve a `world-class quality' leadership position." The reason? "We believe the problems, as always, start at the top."

Based on both study and experience I find the following are key characteristics that seem to exist within most high-performance organisations. Especially those that consistently succeed.
