WA: 69 Sri Lankans arrive at Cocos Islands =2
If landed, the 69 asylum seekers would likely join 63 Sri Lankan and Vietnamese asylum
seekers already in detention at the island's old quarantine station.
Cocos resident Scott Brain said the island's local population of 140 would be outnumbered
by detainees and Australasian Correctional Management guards following the latest boat
arrival.
"We'll be in the minority," Mr Brain said.
Mr Grant said about 30 of an earlier boatload of 65 Sri Lankan asylum seekers had been
repatriated to Sri Lanka.
Those remaining were being processed by Department of Immigration and Multicultural
Affairs staff.
Mr Grant said the quarantine station was sufficiently large to accommodate the latest
arrivals until they could be processed.
