Qld: Farmers plan to step up campaign
WINTON, Qld, Feb 14 AAP - Farmers angered over the Queensland's tree clearing laws
would make their fight an issue in next month's local government elections, a prominent
farm lobbyist said today.
City and shire councils across Queensland will go to the polls on March 25.
Agforce president Larry Acton said many members felt yesterday's mass rural protest
in Winton was just the start in a long process.
Property owners are planning a larger rally in Roma to coincide with the Queensland
government's country cabinet meeting on March 5, he said.
"There are a range of country cabinet meetings coming up, there are a range of time
frames in terms of local government elections and the resumption of parliament in Brisbane,"
Mr Acton said.
Mr Acton also said a march on parliament house had not been ruled out, but would be
driven by grassroots farmers.
"We need to look at the potential opportunities to allow the general family person
from rural Queensland to put their point of view across," he said.
